IN class, we covered the passe simple as a past tense including how it is to be conjugated for Er verbs (-ai, -as, -a, -âmes, -âtes, -èrent) Ir & Re verb endings (-is, -is, -it, -îmes, -îtes, -irent). we also covered many verbs and their stems, such as Dire >> D+ is, is, it, îmes, -îtes, -irent.
Today we learned that most verbs which have a ‘u’ -ending past participle, must use the PP as the stem and add the following endings: -s, -s, -t, -mes, -tes, irent. (I am unable to add the accent circonflex on he U in this application): example: pouvoir is : pu; hence it is je pus, tu pus, il/elle/on put; nous pûmes, vous pûtes ils/elles purent) other verbs like Devoir, avoir, falloir, etc follow the same pattern.
We also learned that the verb ETRE is totally irregular which becomes; Je fus, tu fus, il/elle/on fut, nous fûmes, vous fûtes, ils/elles furent. The verbs Naitre & Mourir are also irregular whose stem is Naqu and mouru. The two ‘sister’ verbs TENIR & VENIR also have an irregular conjugation: Je tins, tu tins, il/elle/on tint, nous tînmes, vous tîntes, ils/elles tinrent; Venir is the same except exchange the T for a V. Je vins, tu vins etc….
Please study those.
