Monday, March 9th – B Day
- Lab:
- Students will complete lab on impact angles and points of convergence
Tuesday, March 10th – A Day
Wednesday, March 11th – B Day
- Lab (weather permitting):
- Students will simulate various types of strikes on a person’s head (a balloon filled with simulated blood) collecting data to bring back to the lab
- Students will measure a number of simulated blood droplets to find the angle of impact
- Students will use the simulated droplets to identify the point of convergence
- Students will make note of the type of spatter vs the type of weapon and force used while striking the balloons
Thursday, March 12th – A Day
Friday, March 13th – B Day
- Lecture:
- Introduce Forensic Anthropology
- review with students particular parts of the bones that are important in ID (i.e., growth plates, bone caps, shafts and sutures)
- compare and contrast for the class the differences between an adult skeleton and a child’s skeleton (i.e., bone numbers, suture marks and growth plates)
- discuss briefly how bones grow (ossification) and how this knowledge can estimate age of the deceased at the time remains are found
- discuss the differences between male and female skeletal remains (size and shape of skull, pelvis and long bones)
- discuss how certain factors can cause trauma to bones, or how certain occupations or environmental factors can provide clues to skeletal remains
- Introduce Forensic Anthropology
- Lab
- Estimation of Body Size From Individual Bones
