The Passe Simple is a past tense used mainly as a written form in French. It means that an action has taken place and has ended. In that sense, it is the same as the Passe Compose. However, it does not require a helping verb or ‘Verbe auxilliaire’.  It does, however, have many exceptions to the usual pattern conjugation of the verb endings.
