French IV- New Lesson _ the Subjonctif

The subjonctif is a difficult subject to talk about since it is hardly used in the English language.

The subjonctif requires two clauses; one clause generally indicating some sort of an emotional feeling followed by QUE followed by a second clause whose verb is conjugated in the subjonctif.  The subject cannot be the same in both clauses.  Ex: I hope that he/she/you/ we/ you /they, is acceptable but never I believe que (that) I. Not in French. j’espère que>> tu/il/elle/on/ nous etc… mais jamais j’espère que je.

The subjonctif is also used after certain particular expressions (to be covered at a later date) such as  Il faut que (one must) Ex: il se fait tard. Il faut que nous dormions ( It is getting late. We must sleep)- first clause IL FAUT QUE, 2nd NOUS DORMIONS.

The ‘key ‘ to the subjonctif is ‘que”.

To form: Please go to the 3rd person plural of a verb in the present tense, drop the ‘ent’ and replace with e,es,e, ions, iez  and ent.  Note ent does not change, but you need to follow these steps in order to determine the correct stem of the verb to be used. NOTE: Certain verbs are irregular and will be covered at a later stage.
