Real life forensics is complex. The need for privacy means that this field of science often occurs behind closed doors, or hidden inside rapidly erected tents and screens at the crime scene. This course will let you get behind these barriers for a closeup view of the forensic scientist at work. You will discover that correctly analyzing evidence can generate vast amounts of information.
Chapter by chapter your textbook will lift the lid on the techniques expert use to fight crime. Some of the methods, such as fingerprinting and firearms analysis, have long histories. Others, such as genetic fingerprinting and mass spectrometry, are more recent arrivals that place the power of the twenty-first-century science in the hands of the law.
Done well forensic science should lead investigators to the truth letting innocent people walk free, but placing criminals behind bars.
I look forward to working with all of you this semester.
