Lecture: Handwriting Analysis
- Explain how a sample of handwriting evidence is compared with an examplar using both qualitative and quantitative characteristics
- Describe the limitations of handwriting analysis
- Identify for the students a historical case of document fraud and explain how the fraudulent document(s) was/were created
- Describe the recent developments in technology for use in hand writing analysis
- Discuss the 12 characteristics of handwriting analysis with the students.
Lab – Handwriting Analysis
- Students will be given 28 samples of handwriting (same statement written by all participants)
- Student will be given signatures of handwriting (all participants in the sampling)
- Students will utilize the 12 characteristics discussed in class to identify the signature with the sample (all matches must be identified by at least three characteristics to be considered a match)
Wednesday, February 19th – A Day
Thursday, February 20th – B Day
Lecture: Currency
- Describe several ways in which businesses prevent check forgery.
- Describe features of new paper currency that protect against counterfeiting
- Compare and contrast older paper currencies with new currencies, including those on plastic stock.
- Discuss with the students some features found in authentic currency
Lab – Examination of US Currency
- Identify who is on the front of $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills
- Describe what image appears on the back of the bills
- Describe the seals, signatures, and images that appear on the American currency
- Summarize the features of redesigned US currency that make counterfeiting it more difficult
Friday, February 21st – A Day
